Meeting Notes

 

Attendees: Julie Dorey, Lacy Cascadden, Dora Barilla, Evelyn Trevino Angel Baltazar, George Joyner, Ann Garcia, Cathy Wahlstrom

 

Purpose of Today’s Meeting: Develop a survey and revisit outcome indicators

 

 

Key Discussion Items:

    1. Dora gave a brief update of what the other work groups are doing.

 

    2.  Julie gave an update of some of the existing projects already taking place within the
         city.

 

    3. Ann was asked for her “take” on Safe Neighborhoods, from her organization’s (Risk Management) perspective.  Ann’s response was “What can the city do to get people out and more physically active?”  The group established that accidents, especially vehicle related, are a major concern  in the city.
           a.    Bike Safety

     b.    Pedestrian Safety

                       - Drivers and walkers

 

     4.  J-walking is an issue – cross walks are not the answer. The key is education.

    1. Cultural

    2. Learned behavior

 

     5.  Evelyn Trevino and Angel Baltazar talked about grant money specified for “Safe          
          Routes to School” which would help with education and with infrastructure change         
            SBC Department of Public Health.

 

      6.  Cathy Wahlstrom mentioned that employers deal with similar safety concerns with
           lunch and break areas. The group established that bike safety is also and important
           factor with businesses within Ontario. 

 

  1. The group would like to design a surveys and fliers to distribute to school and businesses and establish a baseline for data collection.

 

Action Items:

  1. Compilation/paragraphs of existing programs for Ontario Community Report – send to Evelyn.

  2. Education of school and businesses on bike, pedestrian and cross walk safety

  3. Dora to coordinate students who will survey schools, businesses with bicycle commuters

  4. Establish contacts for bike safety and within engineering in the City of Ontario; Kathy will bring a city engineer into the Safe Neighborhoods Workgroup.

  5. Dora will draft a Healthy Ontario statement relative to the homeless issue.

Meeting Notes

Attendees: Suzanne Thomas, Julie Dorey, Lacy Cascadden, Dora Barilla, Evelyn Trevino.

Purpose of Today’s Meeting: Reorganize and restructure group for greater participation, set upcoming work group dates, discuss information regarding Community Report.

Key Discussion Items:

  1. Some programs to highlight for the Community Report included SPOT, CARES, Neighborhood Watch and Clean Streets.

 

  1. Cathy Walstrom will be coming on board to help with reorganization of the Safe Neighborhoods.

 

  1. Additional support and direction will come from Dr Ogilivie, Public Health Law and Policy, with potential financial assistance from Kaiser.

 

  1. Per Suzanne Thomas, top three neighborhood safety issues in her view are 1) vehicle burglary and theft; 2) (perception of) safety on streets, including sexual assault; 3) traffic safety, especially pedestrian accidents.

 

  1. Dora Barilla presented Healthy People 2010 objectives related to crime and safety.

 

  1. The group would like to implement an intern to help with the survey
    a. Watch groups
    b. Test groups
    c. Residents in Clean Streets areas
    d. PTA
    e. Online
    f. Super Markets

 

  1. The group discussed the issue of traffic safety.
    a. Important to target Hispanic culture to teach safety – need to target via social centers such as churches, certain school sites, ESL adult schools
    b. Need to educate drivers on traffic laws
    c. The city can only do so much
     i. Check points
     ii. Two man patrol cars/jay walk officers

  2. d. The country has received grants to help teach children about traffic safety
     i. Involve Kaiser, Metrolink, Auto Club, Railroads, schools, and local business.Need to keep in mind differences between Old and New Model Colonies throughout Safe Neighborhoods efforts.

 

Action Items:

  1. Focus on traffic issues

  2. Reorganization of work group
